COMING TO A CLOSE

This summer semester of 2021 I have worked thoughtfully and rigorously within an archive of LGBTQ history centered in Central Florida. I first conceived this project of video pathways into the collection with a fellow Board Member of the Museum as a 10-video project. What has emerged is three series of five videos that pull at distinct threads within the collections.

THREE SERIES

The first series unites what has previously been positioned as main or major themes in queer histories with underrepresented histories. This first collection consists of 1.1 Social / Bar History (Parliament House), 1.2…

RETURNING TO RESEARCH + DRAWING BOARDS

This week I worked extensively on researching the remaining selections. Including cited, verifiable sources is a priority of this academic archive, and the initial lists and launching points were sketched mostly from other blog posts and community members’ memories. While spending time locating documentary evidence, I was able to revise dates as well…

PUBLIC HISTORY = PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIP

Foundational to public history, academic practice, and a shifting discipline in transition is to make our labor visible and open our practice and process into the public arena. To support this fundamental tenet, I have integrated a conference proposal to this internship. …

EXPERIENCE = RESHOOT

After filming the pilot episode three times, I learned I need to film again. I worked with a small team to discuss environment and equipment. We approached this with an Venn diagram of intersecting resources, constraints, and methodology. [See Week 7 post.]

POSTPRODUCTION PLANS

As I develop the next two scripts, the first Pride Picnic/s in Orlando and the…

DRAFTING BOILERPLATE

This week I built the templates for the boilerplate language to accompany each episode. This consists of all the <About> text: About me, About the project and its criteria, About the Museum. A main focus of this project is to introduce the content of LGBTQ History to audiences who may not have already engaged with the field. Therefore, and as…

DRAFTING GUIDING MEASURES

The AHA created a set of working guides for digital history projects. The National Humanities Alliance structured five goals for the Publicly Engaged Humanities. Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren F. Klein designed a framework of metrics to measure their book, Data Feminism. Of significant value beyond the contribution of the work involved in writing and compiling the text, they also included an auditing process. …

This week we in Central Florida marked the fifth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub tragedy, which claimed the lives of forty-nine people, injured fifty-three, and traumatized countless others. Working with artifacts, collections, oral histories and drafting scripts for production that include context and argument leads to a kind of complicated clarity. My research and writing this week centered more on questions than anything else. How do we set…

Week 4 | 10 June 2021

The work of public historians is negotiated among three intersecting and equal aims: research, interpretation, and contextualization. As I prepare for the pre-production stage of this curated series of video pathways, I am working within these three prongs of public history.

My efforts here draw on my work creating thick contextualizations for the Queer Spaces exhibit (on display during June 2021) at The Center Orlando as…
